Shades of Dystopia

"My role in society, or any artist's or poet's role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all".

John Lennon

Architects and planners have long recognised the inherent ability of urban design to affect mood, temperament, and even the physical and social responses of individuals and communities. Reflecting on my own insecurities, fears and feelings of isolation, I have documented my own existential journey over several months through Milton Keynes.

Guided through streets to my destination and separated from roadways for my safety, I am forced into places of contradiction.

My methods exploit traditional disciplines; I have documented the town from a topographical viewpoint with the changing architectural skylines conveying the movement between places. I have maintained a fixed architectural point of reference that I have continued to use throughout my work in order to convey the emotional connection associated to these non-places.
